Chris Wyant began rowing after suffering a stress fracture to his spine at the age of 12. Faced with the choice of physical therapy or rowing, the idea of being cooped up in a small office room quickly pushed Chris towards the sport. Starting in Fairfield County, Chris was coached by a myriad of coaches including James Mangan. It was James, that introduced Chris to a higher level of training and coaching that would influence his style for years. Honed by Vaclav Kacir and a number of national team coaches lead Chris to great national and international success in a variety of boat classes. Chris was later recruited by and attended the rowing power house University of Washington.
At the University of Washington, Chris competed and won The Head of The Lake Regatta in the 8+ and The Head of The Charles regatta in the single finishing 2nd for his age category in club single scull event before falling ill and having to sit out a full year. Returning to the team, Chris contributed to the success of the varsity 4+ before a “freak” on water accident resulted in Chris being diagnosed with rotated hips, twisted SI joints, pinched sciatic nerves, and 4 bulging disks.
A year of rehabilitation and his high level career behind him, Chris turned to the fitness industry and discovered a love for coaching rowing, fitness, and athleticism. Returning to CT in 2008, Chris was named Co-head coach for both the Fairfield Prep Junior Mens team and Greenwich Masters Crew. In short time, his crews proved to be successful at the highest level and Chris earned praise for his high intensity training and results. With a loyal following, Chris began SoNo Rowing in the summer of 2009 with the goal of helping juniors achieve high levels of success without suffering the same kind of injuries that plagued his own career.
Since inception, Chris’ coaching and program has earned accolades including National Championships in the men’s quad, men’s 8+, and medals in a range of boat classes including singles, doubles, and 4′s. His athletes have been recruited and gone on to some of the top schools in the country including Princeton, Columbia, UPenn, Yale, Cornell, University of Washington, Cal Berkeley, and Stanford.
